College and universities must generate and disseminate new knowledge. They produce quality data and conduct rigorous analysis, which are essential to new discoveries and effective policy-making. Higher education must respond to public concerns and develop the best interpretations of data. Attacks on academic motives and the pursuit of truth must be repelled. Such efforts undermine higher education and weaken the power of citizens to make informed decisions on issues of critical importance to national and global well-being, and to their own lives.
